Intro: ONE PROMINENT AVIATION ATTORNEY SAYS THE HELICOPTER THAT CRASHED THIS WEEK IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY HAS A DESIGN THAT MAKES IT SUSCEPTIBLE TO FIRES. NEWSRADIO 590 KLBJ’S STEVEN PICKERING REPORTS.
Reporter: The Robinson R-22 is one of the nation’s most popular helicopter models, but attorney Ladd Sanger says it’s prone to fires after a crash…like the one in Bartlett which sent a 73-year-old man to the Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment of burns.
Ladd Sanger clip: "They could have made a better design…not to do it."
Reporter: The helicopter design is not in violation of federal safety regulations, but the company has issued a safety bulletin about post-crash fires -- which includes a recommendation to wear a fire-retardant flight suit. Steven Pickering, Newsradio KLBJ.
